高速？快速？

今天業務同事發給我一則e-mail，我覺得很適合拿來這裡灌水。

前情提要：

我幫這位業務同事計算一批高壓控制閥，這批控制閥中有四顆的流體是純氧，客戶指定閥座材質必須是Monel (Monel 是一種以鎳為主成份的合金，M必須大寫，因為Monel 是註冊商標，被美國一家特殊金屬公司註冊去了)，因為比較特別，我必須去信問原廠價格，原廠回信問了我兩個問題：1. 這是新案子還是舊換新？2. 為什麼只有閥座需要Monel 材質？

我把問題丟給同事，他和客戶聯絡過後回了我如下的內容—

Hello Claire: (應該改成Hello, Claire. 原因之前有提過了)

That’s new project,（應該改成That is a new project. 原句少了冠詞a）

For the oxygen use monel material problem, customer point out that in their experiences when the flow speed of oxygen is fast, that might spontaneous combustion occur, so that use monel material to decrease and avoid this occur. （如果這些你都看不下，先別離開，請跳至倒數第二段，那兒有重點）

上面這段照字面翻成中文，意思大概是—

這是新案子。

至於純氧製程用Monel 材質的問題，客戶指出在他們的經驗中，當流體（氧）流速很快時可能會有自燃產生，所以用Monel 材質來減少及避免這情況發生。

我修改成以下內容回文給原廠—

It is a new project.

The end user specified Monel seat based on their experiences. It is to avoid spontaneous combustion when flow speed is high.

再把同事的句子寫一次

For the oxygen use monel material problem, （這句可以不要，因為我們的主題就是在講純氧製程要使用Monel 材質）

customer point out that in their experiences （我改成The end user specified Monel seat based on their experiences.直接點出客戶是依經驗而指定要用Monel 材質的閥座）

when the flow speed of oxygen is fast, that might spontaneous combustion occur, so that use monel material to decrease and avoid this occur. （我改成It is to avoid spontaneous combustion when flow speed is high.解釋客戶因為怕流速快時會產生自燃所以指定Monel 閥座以妨止它發生）

我把同事原來的一句很長很長的句子斷成兩句短句。這是個人習慣問題，我喜歡簡潔的句子，別人看的時候也不會覺得混亂。

本文重點，也是希望大家至少記得的一點就是用speed 這個字來表示快或慢時是用high，low 來形容，而不是fast，slow（同事寫成flow speed is fast）。教你一招好記的，高鐵你搭過吧？高速鐵路就叫High Speed Rail (HSR)，車上的廣播也會用英文歡迎你搭乘高鐵，也是有提到High Speed Rail。

同場加映，may 與might 的差別，大家比較知道的是may 的過去式是might，但這裡不是要講這個。這裡要講的是當may 和might 表示某事可能發生的意思時，may發生的機率比較高，而might 發生的機率就比較低或甚至不太可能發生（前面同事的e-mail 用might 當發生自燃的助動詞，但氧氣高速下發生自燃的可能還滿高的，所以我把它改成may）！比如，你心儀的人邀你去舞會，你當然會想去，這時就用I may go. 但如果是個看到就討厭的人邀你去，你就可以用I might go.（而且要用不太有興趣的口吻）來敷衍了事。
